I am currently studying a National Diploma in Fashion and Clothing. Above are examples of my most successful work, including three different briefs titled; Hair, Royal Blue and Catastrophe. For each project I work towards a Textile and Fashion brief. I take an individual approach towards my work and am constantly experimenting. I repeat my samples and design ideas, developing them as much as possible.
For my Hair brief I was very experimental with my materials and successfully produced my own fabric inspired by the torture and killing of women accused of being witches, because of their red hair.
For my brief titled Catastrophe, I produced a surface pattern which incorporated camouflage and represented the environment of my own personal designed apocalyptic scenario, which was a escape to utopia through a war land. I then designed and made a military styled jacket using my surface pattern as part of the garment.
For my most recent brief titled Royal Blue, I began focusing on texture and depth within my work. My inspiration came from Elizabeth empress of Austria. She was an incredibly beautiful woman who had hair so long it touched the floor, which was worn braided and plaited. She suffered a lot of mourning in her life and was assassinated when stabbed in the chest. Her corset was so tight, it acted like a shield encasing the wound until her clothes were removed and she bled to death. I also looked at Artists Las Hermanas who reference Victorian mourning jewellery in their work to influence my designs. The composition of my textile element on my dress, which was plaited and twisted felt, is inspired by Las Hermanas work and the shield like quality of Elizabeth's corset.
I am hugely inspired by work which evokes emotion and reaction. I want my work to visually communicate to the people who view it. I understand the need for 3D thought within my textiles samples and hope to further my development within textiles, as this is what I am most passionate about and where my strengths are.
